Naomi Watts shares two children with her ex Liev Schreiberbut it was not an easy path for them to become parents.
“I was determined to get pregnant as soon as possible. Due to my hormone levels, I was not a candidate for IVF, but I tried fertility drugs like Clomid and procedures like intrauterine insemination (IUI),” Watts wrote, 56 years old, in his new book, Dare I say it: Everything I wish I knew about menopausewhich was published on Tuesday, January 21. “I would have eaten my dog’s nails if someone had told me it would help.”
Watts wrote that she tracks her ovulation “regularly” and has gotten scans to get updates on her “follicles and egg formation.” She added: “We were having sex at exactly the optimal time for conception. None of this worked.
The actress was 36 when she and Schreiber, now 57, started trying for a baby.
“I always dreamed of being a young mother, but I never got there,” she wrote. “Up until that point, I had spent my entire adult life trying to avoid pregnancy, and so once I felt ready, at 36, I thought I would get pregnant the first time – maybe the second or third at most. The months passed. Nothing.”
Throughout the process, she suffered a miscarriage.
During filming Eastern promisesa film in which Watts rode a motorcycle, the actress discovered she was pregnant. She performed her own stunts in the 2007 film and remained quiet about the life growing inside her.
“I also didn’t want to tell anyone, because it was so early and because I didn’t want to be difficult, so I continued,” she wrote. “It was yet another example of how, as women, we often do things that put us in danger in order to play as a team.”
Watts and Schreiber welcomed their first child, Sasha, in July 2007. Their second child, Kai, was born in December 2008. (Watts and Schreiber ended their 11-year relationship in 2016. She has since married. Billy Crudup. Schreiber and his wife Taylor Neisen welcomed a child in August 2023.)
“I gave birth at 38 and had my second baby very soon after, at 40. I guess my body had somehow learned the baby-making routine,” she wrote. “I always knew I wanted more than one baby, although I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. I had actually wanted more than two, but alas, by then time was really up.
Dare I say it is out now.
