Buffy the Vampire Slayer almost gave Willow a different hair color

In the world of Buffy The Vampire SlayerHair color serves as an easy way to say who is who. For example, on the initial trio of female characters from the show, the leader Lady Buffy is a bold blonde, Cordelia is a broken brunette and Willow is a reserved redhead. However, the actor of Willow, Alyson Hannigan, later revealed that the three ladies originally had the same shade of hair and that she had jumped on Joss Whedon’s offer to give a member of this trio red hair.

Willow has chosen her hair color

Whedon had not organized shows before Buffy The Vampire SlayerBut he was wise enough at the time to know that the public needed easy ways to distinguish the characters from each other. According to Buffy Star Alyson Hannigan, her willow character has obtained his emblematic color of red hair after Whedon expressed her concerns so that she, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charisma Charpentier had all, “in a way the same nuance” Brown hair. He asked “someone wants to be red”, and Hannigan says that she “went for that”.

While the Buffy Showrunner may not have thought so far, giving the color of red hair to Willow was a perfect choice for his character. Culturally speaking, red hair has often been associated with wild, without hindrance and even surprisingly violent. At the start of the seasons of the series, however, Willow was not like anything, with his character appearing as the geek archetypal wallflower in the series.

Why, then, was the Buffy Showrunner’s decision to give Willow a red hair color so perfect? It mainly comes out of its shell throughout the series,

This version was an attractive leather mother who used sex as a weapon, and although entertaining, this embodiment of Willow was much closer to the persistent stereotype of the redheads as attractive. The mane of Auburn of Willow made the personality and the wardrobe of his vampire version even more convincing, and her hair color was even more perfect when her human self was becoming slowly more like her vampire.

While Buffy The Vampire Slayer Never regularly put Willow in the Domme outfit of his vampire version outside of this episode, his red hair also helped sell part of his plot developments adjacent to vampires. She jokes her girlfriend Tara that she is “not tall with the butch”, but in their relational dynamics, Tara becomes more of the girl MOUSY than Willow was in season 1, and Willow becomes a witch to To take to revel in your growing power. And these stereotypes on the fact that the redheads are violent certainly seem to be confirmed when Willow becomes the big villain of season 6 (although in all honesty, her hair is getting black when she fully wrong).

Does that mean that Buffy The Vampire Slayer Joss Whedon planned all these moments of character and the development of the plot when Alyson Hannigan jumped at the occasion of red hair color? Of course not. Even the biggest fans in the series can admit that a large part of this has been developed on the fly, which is largely explained why season 6 was such a hot waste that was barely saved by musical episodes and Willow’s witch heels. Nevertheless, red hair ended up being perfect for his character, and it is completely normal that everything works magic as regards our favorite witch on the screen.
