According to medical examiner’s records reviewed by Us every weekBaena’s official cause of death is suicide. The same medical records revealed that an examination had been carried out and his body could be released to the family. At the time of publication, the case status is still listed as “open” despite the cause of death being determined.
No additional causes or significant conditions regarding Baena’s death have been listed.
Baena died Friday January 3 at the age of 47, according to the same medical file also consulted by We. Until now, the circumstances of his death were unknown.
Baena is survived by Plaza, 40, who has yet to speak publicly about her husband’s death. We requested comment.

Baena and Plaza began dating in 2011 and officially married in 2020 after a decade together. The couple has kept their relationship largely private, but Plaza opened up about her and her nuptials to Baena during a December 2021 appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show.
“A lot has happened for me during COVID. Yes, we got married. It’s a big deal,” Plaza recalled at the time. “We were a little bored one evening. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. It’s real, look it up.

“I very quickly created an altar of love in our yard. Made of our love, small stones, smoke, fire. But I’m pretty sure it’s legal.
Although Baena and Plaza have each had their own successful solo careers, they have been able to work together on numerous projects, including Life after Beth, the small hours And Spin me around.
“She’s great. I would work with her if she wasn’t my wife, but luckily she’s my wife,” Baena told Reel Talker of his potential to work with his wife in August 2022. “The opportunity to do something of creative (together) where we ‘ are you both fulfilled – is this rare?
A few months before Baena’s death, Plaza had briefly discussed her marriage during a September 2024 appearance on the show Howard Stern Show. “I would stay away (from dating actors),” she joked at the time. “I’m married to a writer/director. I’ve never really dated an actor (or) been with an actor for a long time.
She added: “I think about it and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to be with myself’ or ‘I don’t want to do that.’ But sometimes I see there are so many acting couples and you’re like, “Wow, look at them.” They must really be laughing about it.
